Off-track garage door repair
A door that has come off its track needs to be stopped where it is and reset properly. That runs $195 to $310, including checking and straightening the track. Don't run the opener to try to correct it, because that bends more track and can twist the sections.
How doors come off track
A vehicle bumping the door is the most common cause and the most obvious. After that it's a snapped lift cable letting one side drop, rollers worn far enough to jump the track, or a track that's already bent from an earlier knock.
Occasionally the track is fine and the opening isn't. Along the Mission Boulevard corridor through Fremont and Hayward, slow fault creep and settling on bay mud can pull an opening out of square over decades, and a door running in a frame that's no longer square binds and eventually rides out of the track.
What to do right now
Leave the door where it is. Don't run the opener, and don't try to force it back by hand. A door that's off track is carrying weight in a direction the hardware wasn't designed for.
If a car is shut inside and you need it, call and say so on the phone. Getting the door open safely is a different job from getting it fixed, and we can often do the first straight away.
What the repair involves
We secure the door, take the load off, and lift it back into the track section by section. Then we check every roller, straighten or replace the damaged track, and check that the horizontal tracks are still parallel and level.
If a cable failed, that gets replaced at the same time. If the opening itself has moved, we'll tell you, because resetting a door into a frame that's out of square just means we're back again.

Can a bent track be straightened or does it need replacing?
A light bend can often be straightened. A crease or a kink needs the section replaced, because a straightened kink never runs true and the rollers catch on it.
