Garage door repair in Alvarado, Union City

Alvarado is the older half of Union City and it carries more history than any other district we cover. It was founded in 1850 by the Horner brothers, became the first county seat of Alameda County in 1853, and in 1870 was home to the first successful sugar-beet mill in the United States. The Historic Alvarado District is still marked out today.

What the housing here is like

The district mixes what's left of the historic core with the 1970s and 1980s tract housing that dominates Union City as a whole. Union City overall is 57.8% detached and 64.7% owner-occupied with a median build year of 1980, and a door hung in 1980 has now been through two or three sets of springs.

Getting to Alvarado

Alvarado Boulevard is one of the five places a car can cross the Alameda Creek channel, which makes this end of Union City reasonably direct from Newark. Alvarado-Niles Road runs east from here and eventually becomes Niles Boulevard. It never meets Mission Boulevard, which is worth knowing if you're describing a location by cross streets.

Worth knowing locally

Sugar Mill Landing Park, on the site of that 1870 mill, holds the first monument in the United States dedicated solely to Flight 93.

What we expect to find

Flat ground and old fill mean settling rather than shaking is what moves an opening here. A door that used to seal along the bottom and now shows daylight at one corner has usually not changed shape itself. The frame around it has. We check the opening with a level before we sell you a new bottom seal that won't solve it.

Questions about Alvarado

There's a gap under one corner of my door. Is the seal worn out?

Maybe, but check the frame first. If the gap is at one corner rather than across the width, the opening has more likely moved out of level, and a new seal will just wear unevenly again. We measure before recommending anything.

Do you cover both Alvarado and Decoto?

Yes, all of Union City in 94587. Each half has its own page because the housing is genuinely different.
