Niles Canyon Road runs 7.1 miles east from Niles Junction as a two-lane state scenic route, and it closes with some regularity. A rockslide shut it on 9 January 2023 and it reopened on the 12th, and in February 2024 a slipout dropped part of the road into Alameda Creek. We don't take bookings on the far side of the canyon, because a closure there means we simply don't arrive. Tri-Valley work routes around by I-680 and I-580 instead.
What we expect to find
Old openings are the recurring issue. Headroom and backroom in a pre-war garage are frequently below what a standard sectional door and a rail-drive opener need, and the answer is usually a low-headroom track kit or a wall-mount opener rather than the standard package. It's cheaper to find that out with a tape measure than after a door has been ordered.
Getting to Niles
Niles is only about four miles away in a straight line but 5.5 by road, and every one of those miles is on signalized city streets rather than freeway. That's the old State Route 84 alignment, which the City of Fremont took over in 2019 already in poor condition. Twelve to thirteen minutes is realistic on clear roads and longer in the afternoon.
